Star Sapphire & Diamond Cluster Ring

Star Sapphire & Diamond Cluster Ring c.1950

SKU: RS152
£4,950.00Price

An unusual star sapphire & diamond cluster ring.

This beautiful ring has a lilac cabochon star sapphire to the centre surrounded with a border of 10 brilliant cut diamonds in a rubover daisy cluster design.

The ring is low set to the hand with the cabochon sapphire sitting higher than the diamonds. The head of the ring has an openwork gallery with chenier detailing and tapered shoulders onto a plain band.

Star sapphires are caused by an optical phenomenon known as asterism. Asterism – from the Latin ‘astrum’, meaning star – is caused by small needle-like inclusions of the mineral rutile. This causes the light to reflect in a unique way, causing a star to form on the stone.

A star sapphire needs to have the right amount of rutile to allow it to be cut and polished, and they are often cut into cabochons with high domes to maximise the star effect. Star sapphires are becoming increasingly more difficult to find.
