Edwardian Fox Terrier Reverse Intaglio Crystal Brooch c.1910
A fabulous Edwardian brooch depicting a Fox Terrier.
This beautiful brooch has a finely painted Terrier's head with a wonderful expression detailed into the carved rock crystal. The crystal is backed with mother of pearl, set within a fine gold border and mounted onto a slim gold brooch pin with safety catch. The brooch is closed to the reverse and has an 18 stamp under the pin. The brooch could be converted into a pendant if required.
This technique is made by the rock crystal being cut into a cabochon shape and a detailed design carved into it from the reverse. The image is painted inside the crystal so that when viewed from the front it appears in three dimensions. This technique is known as a “reverse intaglio.” The technique is sometimes referred to as an 'Essex crystal.'
