Georgian Pearl Set Padlock Brooch with Locket Compartment c.1800
A fabulous Georgian padlock locket brooch set with seed pearls and fancy goldwork around the edge The locket section encloses ropework initials 'RMW' against a silk backing. The padlock has a ropetwist top and 2 small chains attached ending in a heart and a cross indicating faith and charity. There is a pendant loop and a brooch fitting to the reverse. The brooch has a later insciption dated 'Jan 17th 1908'. This unusual piece may have originally been a betrothal gift and then again later in 1908.
