A late Victorian Fly Brooch
The brooch has a stylised Fly set with a pearl abdomen and a diamond thorax, the fly has pearl wings and is beautifully made. Images of flies on ancient gems were a talisman against evil. It is also a symbol of courage and strength – brave soldiers in ancient times were awarded gold flies.
The brooch is possibly French in origin with indistinct control marks.
Era: Victorian, 1839 - 1901
Measurements: Brooch 3.6cm in length, 1.5cm at widest point. Weight 2.5g
Hallmarks: Star mark to reverse of wing, indistinct French control marks to pin.
