Zircon
The birthstone for December, the name zircon derives from the Arabic words ‘Zar', meaning gold, and 'Zum' meaning colour.
Zircons as gemstones can be traced back to Greece and Italy in the 6th Century AD.
Zircon is mined in Sri Lanka and Burma and became very popular in the 1920’s and 30’s due to its fabulous blue colour and high refractive index (sparkle!).
Zircon actually comes in a wide spectrum of colours, from colourless through yellow, green, brown and even red.
