Edwardian Fire Opal and Diamond Drop Earrings circa 1910

£4,950.00

An unusual and rare pair of Edwardian fire opal and diamond earrings.

Each finely handmade earring comprises a pear-cut fire opal in a gold claw setting, suspended below three articulated diamond drops, in a rub-over setting with a milgrain edge.

The earrings are surmounted by a three-leaf clover motif set with further diamonds in claw and milgrain setting.

They have long hook fittings for pierced ears with a safety catch keeping them secure when on the ear. They are beautifully articulated and move freely when worn.

These striking fire opals display a semi-transparent, glowing orange body colour. Their vivid appearance is caused by traces of iron oxide within the stone, producing the rich fiery tones that the gemstone is known for. Unlike traditional opals, fire opals are valued for their intense body colour and luminosity rather than play-of-colour.

The finest examples, like these, are found in Mexico. Their almost molten appearance gives them a distinctive character unlike any other coloured gemstone.
