A beautiful Victorian comet brooch.
This elegant and wearable brooch would have been made after the craze for comet sightings in the late 1850's and 1860's . The great comet of 1861 was seen in the evening of June 30th when the Earth was believed to have passed through the comet’s tail.
The brooch has a crescent shape representing the moon encrusted with old cut diamonds. Above is a star shape set with an old cut diamond representing the comet followed by gold trails set with pearls, sapphires and diamonds. The brooch is made in silver and gold typical of the Victorian era.
The brooch has a sprung gold pin to the reverse, it is finely made and in wonderful condition and a rare example of this late Victorian type of jewellery.
