Curating an antique jewellery collection is as much about personal taste as it is about the history and the craftsmanship of the piece. Whether you're looking for your first few pieces or expanding an established collection, it’s about finding items that speak to you. The most beautiful collections aren’t necessarily the largest or the most valuable; they’re the ones that feel personal and individual.
Unlike modern jewellery, antique pieces come with history. They’ve lived other lives before becoming part of yours, and that’s what makes them special. A Victorian ring, an Art Deco bracelet or a Georgian pendant each carries a different design language, and so, collecting a range of pieces over time means that your collection will reflect your own taste, memories and experiences.
We explore our tips for curating an antique jewellery collection below.
Start with a piece you’ll wear often.
Look for something that fits into your day-to-day style; you’ll enjoy it so much more than a piece that sits in a box waiting for a specific occasion. For some people this might be an old-cut diamond ring, for others a Victorian chain, a signet ring or a pair of antique earrings. The important thing is wearability. Antique jewellery should feel lived in and personal rather than overly precious.
Trust your instincts.
The best antique jewellery collections aren’t necessarily the biggest or the most valuable; they’re the ones that feel most personal. If something catches your eye and makes your heart skip a beat, get it. It’s very easy to become overly focused on investment value, periods or even trends when starting out. But instinct matters and the pieces people treasure most are rarely the ones they bought because they felt sensible - they’re the pieces they couldn’t stop thinking about.
Mix your metals and eras.
Why not combine a Georgian guard chain with a Victorian pendant, or pair an Art Deco ring with a mid-century piece? Mixing periods and metals creates a look that feels layered and personal rather than matching or overly curated. Don't be afraid to experiment. Traditionally, antique jewellery would have been accumulated over generations, with pieces from different periods sitting side by side in the same collection, complementing each other in ways you wouldn't expect.
Buy the best version you can find.
It’s better to buy one piece you’re obsessed with than three you feel lukewarm about. If you don't love it, wait, as the perfect piece will come along. Antique jewellery rewards patience and special pieces have a habit of appearing when you least expect them. Collecting slowly also allows your eye to develop over time, helping you understand what you gravitate towards and love.
Pay attention to the condition.
Antique jewellery is meant to be worn, but it's also delicate. Always check for things like loose stones, worn claws, or evidence of resizing. If you find a piece you love that needs a little attention, don't be put off; a skilled jeweller can restore antique pieces beautifully, and it is well worth doing to protect something special for future generations. Part of collecting antique jewellery is understanding that signs of age are not necessarily flaws and gentle wear can be part of what gives antique pieces their charm.
Ask questions and buy from a trusted source
There is so much 'reproduction' antique and period jewellery about! Some is sold as antique 'style' which means it is not genuine but a reproduction (modern copy), but sadly there are dealers out there who sell items as antique and period when they are not. Always ask questions if you are unsure about an item and ask the dealer why a piece is described as a particular era 'for example as Art Deco.' A specialist will be only too pleased to share their knowlegdge.
Have a signature stone or motif.
Most people gravitate towards a stone or motif. Maybe it's pearls, crescent moons or turquoise. Recurring themes within your collection help create a sense of cohesion over time, whilst still allowing room for variety. There’s no right or wrong approach; find what you love and centre your collection around it.
Make notes on each piece.
Keeping notes on where you bought a piece, what drew you to it, and what it reminds you of transforms a collection into a personal archive. Over time, it becomes a record not just of the jewellery itself but of your own taste and the moments attached to each piece. It's such a joy to look back on, and it adds another layer of meaning to everything you own. Antique jewellery is inherently sentimental and recording stories attached to your pieces ensures that sentiment survives for future generations.
Wear what you collect.
It’s easy to keep your best pieces for special occasions. But jewellery was made to be worn. If you love it, wear it. We find it sad that beautiful antique pieces are locked away and never enjoyed. Jewellery comes alive when worn and pieces begin to feel part of the person wearing them. If you love it, wear it.
