A beautiful Edwardian Essex crystal heart pendant by Mürrle Bennett and Co.
The cabochon-cut rock crystal has a 4-leaf clover, beautifully painted on the front. This is backed with mother of pearl, making the decoration shine. The painting is in excellent condition with no deterioration to the design.
Typical of the era, the pendant is backed in gold with a runner ring at the top for a chain or cord.
The pendant does not have a chain, but we can source one (at an additional charge) if required.
This technique is made by cutting the rock crystal into a heart shape, into which a detailed design is carved from the reverse. The image is painted inside the crystal so that when viewed from the front it appears in three dimensions. This technique is known as a “reverse intaglio.” The technique is sometimes referred to as an 'Essex crystal.'
Mürrle Bennett & Co was established in 1896 in London by Ernst Mürrle & J.B. Bennett. They specialised in high-quality, affordable silver & gold jewellery and produced jewellery predominantly in the Art Nouveau style.
Their designs were often characterised by abstract motifs typical of Art Nouveau and the Arts & Crafts movements. Many of their items were made for and sold by Liberty & Co in London.
