Victorian Silver Locket and Collar c.1880
A large Victorian 'Aesthetic Movement' oval locket and collar.
This beautful locket has sylised acanthus leaf decoration typical of the era and is finely engraved with 2 swallows chasing a butterfly over water. It is plain to the reverse with silver hallmarks for 1880.
The original photo holders are still inside with their silk backing perfect for two photos. There is a concealed hinge to one side of the locket and a large articulated bail to the top.
The collar which we believe to be original to the piece has fluted rectangular openwork links and a large round runner ring typical of pieces from this era.
The locket is in beautiful condition and is incredibly stylish when worn.
The Aesthetic Movement celebrated ‘art for art’s sake,’ separate of any historic motifs or meanings. Images of swallows were often given to symbolise everlasting love as the swallow returns every spring.
