Ruby vs Sapphire: Ruby is defined as red corundum. The presence of chromium is largely what makes a corundum gemstone red. All other varieties of corundum, anything that isn't red, are classified as sapphire. Although generally associated with the colour blue, sapphires actually include all non-red coloured corundum gems. including pink which is the boundary between rubies and sapphires as pink is commonly considered a light tone of red.
