Georgian Snake Carnelian Fob Seal c.1820
An unusual large Georgian 15ct gold snake fob seal.
The fob has an entwined snake with its head holding the tail attached to a beautifully detailed gold covered seal with a grape and vine repoussé work border.
The grape and vine represents fertility and prosperity while the snake is represented as the Ouroboros, an ancient symbol that portrays the snake devouring its own tail in a continuous cycle of destruction and renewal. Perpetually shedding and regrowing its skin, the snake symbolizes the eternal circle of life and regeneration. Snakes were also associated with wisdom and eternal love and given to protect the wearer.
The fob is in fabulous condition and has a plain carnelian inset which has not been carved with a seal or crest.
