Georgian Ruby Ring

Georgian Ruby & Chrysolite Ring c.1820

SKU: RR053
£2,350.00Price

An unusual late Georgian ruby and chrysolite ring.

The central oval ruby and pale yellow pear shaped chrysolite gemstones are in a typically early 19th Century rubover setting with beadwork decoration to the edges. These are mounted within stylised floral 'split' shouders onto a slightly tapered plain gold shank. The gemstones are open to the reverse.

The ring is very low set to the hand and in wonderful condition.

Chrysolite is an ancient term for the yellow form of peridot. Yellow-green peridot has been called chrysolite since Biblical times and comes from the Gree: “golden stone". The golden yellow colour of this gem was associated with the sun and Sunday and was thought to dispel various "terrors" of the night but only if it was worn in a gold setting.

This ring, in common with the vast majority of Georgian pieces is a dress ring and will not take 'heavy' wear being over 200 years old. Rings of this age and condition are increasingly hard to find.
