Edwardian Enamel & Diamond Maltese Cross Pendant c.1910
£1,150.00
An elegant Edwardian diamond Maltese Cross pendant/charm.
The cross is set with nine old cut diamonds open to the reverse, finely mounted within a circular white enamel border.
There is a gold runner ring to the top.
The Maltese Cross was officially adopted by the Order of the Knights Hospitallers of St. John in 1126. Its eight points symbolise the order’s obligations: to live in truth, have faith, repent one’s sins, give proof of humility, love justice, be merciful, be sincere and whole-hearted, and to endure persecution. The cross took on renewed prominence when Queen Victoria recognised the charitable work of the Order of St John in 1888. Traditionally, men of the Order wore white crosses, while women were presented with jewelled examples like this one.
