A stylish Victorian banded agate snake locket.
This quirky pendant has a central banded agate with a golden snake wrapped around it in the symbol of the oroborus. The pendant has a glazed locket compartment to the reverse.
There is a runner ring to the top allowing the locket to be worn on a ribbon or chain. The pendant is in fabulous condition.

Mourning jewellery had adopted snake symbolism from the late 18th Century conveying the cyclical nature of life, death and rebirth. The fashion for snake jewellery then increased with Queen Victoria's engagement to Albert in 1839 when she was given an emerald serpent ring representing enduring love and commitment.
