Victorian MIZPAH Heart Locket c.1900
£825.00
A Victorian MIZPAH heart locket pendant.
The pendant has MIZPAH written in raised script and inscribed “The Lord watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another”. Mizpah is a Hebrew word that has come to symbolise an emotional bond between two people and the phrase is from Genesis 31:49.
The locket is hinged to one side and opens to reveal two sections each for a photograph. The locket is plain to the back. It has a runner ring enabling it to be hung from a chain or ribbon.
Mizpah items rose to popularity in the early Victorian era and were exchanged between close friends or family, often after a long separation. They remain popular to the current day.
Antique Mizpah pieces are extremely collectable often given as a coming of age gift at Barmitzvahs and Batmitzvahs.
Era: Victorian, 1837 - 1901
Measurements: Locket 2.5cm (1") in length including bail, 1.7cm at the widest point.
The locket is 2.1 grams in weight.
