Victorian Silver Perfume Flask Pendant c.1873
£895.00
A wonderful Victorian perfume flask pendant by Sampson Mordan.
An elegant silver perfume flask with a repoussé work design of a stylised swallow design to both sides acanthus leaves top and bottom. This is a technique in which the silver is shaped by hammering from the reverse side to create a design in low relief.
The bottle hangs from a silver chain with a runner ring to the top enabling the perfume flask to be worn on a chain. It is in fabulous condition. There is a 'push' button to the front which opens the flask revealing the gilt interior of the bottle.
Sampson Mordan was a British silversmith and a co-inventor of the first patented mechanical pencil. During his youth, he was an apprentice of the inventor and locksmith Joseph Bramah. He entered into a business partnership with Gabriel Riddle, an established stationer selling his pencils and after the partnership with Riddle dissolved, Mordan continued to sell his silver pencils as "S. Mordan & Co.", adding many other types of silver and gold items to his product line.
In addition to pencils the firm had a large production line of small silver and gold items, most of them belonging to the type of "novelties" so popular at the end of the 19th/beginning of the 20th century. They were supplied to many retailers, including Asprey & Sons and the Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. Ltd.
